I remember reading an article in an outdoor magazine years ago that said a lot of the biggest Mulie bucks 'seldom rut', and many have only 1 nut. They stay up high(duh), and rarely if ever encounter does during the rut.
Is there any shred of evidence that the nut part is true-at least in some cases?
Has anyone else ever heard of this or remember the article?
How about other animals?
I suspect they need at least 1 to generate testosterone?

There are some bucks that don't rut at all and never go out of velvet. Its pretty crazy, they are ridiculously old, and their nuts have actually shrunk. I don't remember what video they were on, but they showed it. I believe the one they showed was shot on the strip in Arizona.

I think you guys are confused. So called "cactus bucks" never shed their velvet or drop thier antlers because at some time during thier young years, they lost thier testicles. Very old bucks will stay above timberline and not engage in the rut. Some old bucks below timber line never engage in the rut. Then there are old bucks, below timber line who never learn to stay away from the does. They just wind up old and broke.

Thanks danr, I couldn't remember the word for what they were called, but Cactus Buck is what i was looking for.
