I thought Mustangs Rule thread on Burro deer was interesting. I like to nerd out on stuff like that.
Does anyone else have an interesting, distinct subspecies of deer in your area? If you do, maybe post a pic and a little writeup about why it's distinct. I'll go first.
On the Louisiana and Texas coast, we have a subspecies of whitetail called the Avery Island whitetail (Odocoileus virginianus mcilhennyi). What makes it distinctive is they are smaller in body and skull size, and they rut very early in the season, starting in late August and wrapping it up by late October. Because of this early rut, they don't cross much with other subspecies. Here is an example of one I took last year. It was early October and the rut was starting to wind down.
