Deer Hunting North West Wyoming

I’m putting together plans to explore north west Wyoming. I have a general deer tag and will probably be based around Cody. Hunt dates aren’t idea but will be fixed at Oct 12 - 18.

My initial thoughts are to head high looking for mule deer but also happy to hunt whitetails lower down.

Google is great for finding possible trailheads to explore, eating places, cool places to check out and good basic accommodation.

But of course local knowledge is best! If anyone is willing to point me in the right direction I’d really appreciate any messages.

As always happy to help with New Zealand hunting.

First off, if you’re a non resident you can’t get to very much high county unless you hire an outfitter. Most of the high country around Cody is wilderness and nonresidents can’t go in alone. Next, most of the deer are up in the high country until the first part of November and later. Sorry this is negative but just the facts. You can hunt some Forest service and might find a buck that came down early but I wouldn’t bet on it. Sorry.
Oh, and I do live here.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely a non resident so will do some research on high country that I can access. Looks like amazing country so will be nice to spend a few days even if I don't see deer.

I know if the migration is on, it can be a very fun hunt.

There are also a few whiteys that run around the area as well, if that is something you are open too if you do not see deer up high.

I've booked my accommodation and according to google maps the Proud Cut Saloon is 5 mins walk.
Proud cut/The Irma have decent steaks, pat oharas for a burger, el vaquero for good Mexican.

As far as the hunting as necali pointed out alot of wilderness on the national Forest will limit what you can get access to. Plenty of other areas to find deer up here though

Thanks.

I have started looking at gohunt maps and have found a few areas outside wilderness that might be ok. Amazing looking country, just hope there's a few deer - any legal buck would be great.

PM if you have questions about specific trailheads, safe travels.

The Buffalo Bill Museum was wayyy cooler than I anticipated. Had a blast there.

We ate at Bubba’s Bar-B-Que on the recommendation of some locals we ran into. It was super busy, but food came quick and it was pretty good.
We also ate at the Wyo-Dough pizza joint. It was busy, had subpar service off the start, but the second waitress was much better and got a handsome tip. Pizza was pretty good, plenty of choices.

I’ll be a couple hours away at the same time, if you find yourself in a pickle, I might be able to help, although looks like Necali and Wyoelk are probably more help than me

Thanks beagle001. Appreciate the info and offer.

Thanks again everyone for the recommendations and help in general. I’ve had a late change of plans and now planning to hunt in Nevada. I unexpectedly got a returned tag.

I will however return another year to hunt around Cody. But I’ll plan to hunt at the end of the Gen tag season, which I think will be much better than mid Oct.
