Which day-packs were you guys using? I'll likely use one of my standard framed packs, but my non-res friend who doesn't own a pack wants to make a purchase. I'm thinking he might get more use from a day-pack than a larger pack once the hunt is over.

Have you ever shot sitka blacktails?
The reason I ask, is because most people, me included, always thought they were kind of small. They arent, they're actually pretty good sized...not real tall but stocky.
I dont know how you guys are intending to get your deer off the hill...but you wont fit a boned blacktail with head and cape in a day pack. Where we shot our deer, it would have been a real pain in the ass to drag them to the beach.
What we did was each of us took half a deer...front shoulder, hind quarter with the bone still in. One guy took the head and cape the other guy took the backstraps, loins, etc. That made a pretty balanced load for both of us and we could continue to hunt our way out.
I used my Mystery Ranch NICE frame with the 6500 CI bag as a daypack. Plenty of room for rain gear, spotting scope (a must in that country, saves a TON of walking), extra coat, etc. Plus plenty of room once you kill one for the meat, cape, etc.
I dont know, I'd shy away from a daypack...

I'll second Buzz's recomendation. I always take my regular pack, 6000 ci, on day hunts. It's easier and a lot safer to cut the deer up right after you shoot it instead of coming back for it later. Also a good idea to always carry enough emergency equipment to spend the night if the weather goes fowl or you suffer an injury. My emergency overnight gear (depending on time of year) consists of long underwear, extra fleece jacket, stocking cap, gloves, small tarp and a little extra food.

Shot some small blacktails off of Hinchinbrook one year, but that has been 7 years now. Guess I forgot just how much meat came off the deer (all does). I intended to bring my 7500 cubic in. pack anyway, but was looking at Oscar's photos from his last hunt there and was thinking something along the line of 2500 cubic in. for my partner. Bryce and O looked like they were sporting day packs. I remember Greenie talking up the Mystery Ranch packs.

There are a few things I don't go anywhere without, for example my sleeping bag. It will be nice to pack up and down the mountain for deer with a modified (lightened load) pack after lugging a fully loaded camp around for a week chasing goats.

I used a Badlands 2200 and have no regrets. We were hunting in pairs and could split up a deer between two people. Also used the pack as my airline carry-on.
