I carry a small silnylon tarp (12 oz), puffy jacket and pants to match expected conditions, and a few bics/stormproof matches/firestarters.

Once you've done it a time or two it's not a big deal barring some compounding factor (injury).

I have a small military down blanket I started keeping in my pack for that exact reason.
