I have Tikka’s but not the compact. No issues at all with any of them. I do have an older Remington model 7 7-08 and it is one of my favorite rifles I have ever owned. 7-08 goes great in a 20in barrel. Good luck.

Question about tikkas, so the short actions are basically a long action with a bolt stop correct?

Are the short actions technically longer in the throat then? Can you load them longer than some other off the shelf short actions?

You can change the bolt stop and insert a long action mag, they all fit. As far as how they will feed/function, I have no idea. There are M and M+ short action mags. As far as throat and max lengths, also have no idea. I shoot factory rounds.

SA mags. Hornady Precision ELD-X barely makes it into the .308 M mag but it works. M+ could push the bullets out further.

I have a Remington Model 7 in .260 Rem. It shoots Remington core-loks 140 grains amazingly well. Doesn't group Nosler (none of my Remingtons shoot nosler). Its an 18-inch barrel and have no issues on elk and pronghorn. I assume the 7mm-08 would be similar results. Its compact enough I can shoot it left or right handed.

I would vote a tikka as well i have a few of them. They have been great rifles. One my kids use alot is a 20" 6.5 creedmoor

I really over paid on mine by about $200-300 but am really pleased. They are very accurate, smooth action, and definitely compact.

May consider Kimber Hunter or Mountain Ascent rifles if like light. Mine and my buddy's all shoot sub moa with factory ammo and come in at about 5.5lbs.

Not sure prices now, but the Hunter used to be very reasonable for what you get.

Tikka t3/t3x have one action length for every cartridge. It is a bit shorter than m700 and other "Long Actions" and is constrained in that regard if one wants to load long action cartridges longer than the common 3.34" SAAMI COAL that many long action cartridges are designed on.

Not necessarily. In general i'd expect most chamberings to have standard SAAMI spec throats. The 6.5 Creedmoor chambers seem to frequently have a little longer than SAAMI throat though.

In general, the M+ magazine (short action magazine that comes standard with creedmoors but works in 308/7-08/243 chamberings too) allows longer COAL than many other factory magazines. The 308 family cartridges come standard with an M magazine that is more in line with traditional Short Action COAL dimensions. If one wanted to load even longer than the M+ magazines allow swapping out the bolt stop for a long action one and using a long action magazine is an easy solution.

Another vote for the tikka. (But I'm also a tikka whore. A T3 300WM, a T3x 308, and a T1x 22 all call my safe

I epoxied the lug in place but didn’t like how the action would rock or just drop out of the stock with the action screws removed. I bed the sides of the action afterward at the lug to get it to lock in place. Much better. I didn’t shoot it without the bedding so couldn’t tell you if it even made a difference but I don’t like loose fitting actions in a stock. The neat thing about Tikka is I also put my 7mag in the same stock and tried it out.

I love how the tikka stocks are so easy to change out. I'm not a huge fan of the stock the rifle comes with.
