Colorado Opportunity Elk

I think in a few years it’s gonna create some more opportunities for mid tier tags. You’ll have a lot of guys that want to hunt every year and a lot of guys chasing glory tags. May see some point dumps as guys begin to age out but the system already has that happening. I could be wrong on all that but making people use points is definitely gonna have a effect

I get about one week or so that time of year to hunt West of the Mississippi. So on years I draw somehwere other than Colorado (most years) I would elect to take the point. Not complaining though, its there game and im just happy I get to play. I'll still shoot for a great tag on those years. And if I draw ill decide which hunt to not go on or how I will make the time work to use both. So I think you're right the mid tier tags will be much easier to draw when you figure most people will be in the "I'm hunting this year or shoot for the moon boat."

I just made it real easy on myself to wait and drew AZ. Next year I'll just have to draw New Mexico, I guess 😉. Then I plan to keep the streak alive with one of those ho-hum tags in Utah. Then maybe I'll slum a year in Montana. Followed by a point burn in WY. Who knows, by then I could draw AZ again. By the time I "need" to apply in CO, I should be again catching up to the tags I can draw this year and all this regulation change nonsense will be in the rearview mirror like it never even happened. Sound like a plan?

Better than no plan at all.

With the PP point code going away and the only way to accumulate a point is by applying for a unit and not drawing it. There will be a ton of guys having to apply now. Last year, 80k NR applied for just an elk point and 73k NR for a deer point.
The way I read the new regs as it relates to preference points is that you can purchase a preference point only in the primary draw or you can apply for a first choice hunt code in the primary draw and if you don’t draw that first choice you will be awarded a preference point. I think the change is that you will not be able to apply for a preference point with your first choice and a hunt code with your second choice. That is how I read the elimination of the preference point only hunt code. In other words, I think you will still be able to apply/purchase a preference point only without having to apply for a hunt code.

Began a new chapter of my life today. Just had my first two Social Security checks deposited. See if there's enough in our account for a couple tags lol. Definitely need elk meat.

I don’t think it will be “worth” it for you. Seems like your to worried about the money spent and not the adventure gained. I’ve put well over twice that up for a tag this fall that probably doesn’t have the quality the one your applying for does. It puts me in the field for a week with a friend I haven’t got to hunt with for a couple years it’s money well spent.
This. I put my son in for multiple tags with the understanding that if he draws multiple that we likely won't be able to hunt them all, and I won't be able to get a refund. Worth the cost for the potential adventure and memories made with my son. I don't have a large disposable income either.
