Colorado bull elk GMU 22

my brothers and I are looking into our first out of state bull elk hunt and was going to focus on the OTC bull elk tag in unit 22 in Colorado. I am curious to know the elk population out there before heading out. I was looking up Piceance Creek Road was a good spot to start and of course getting off the roads and hiking back away from everything which we are not afraid to do. Never been elk hunting in Colorado and it sounds like something we’d enjoy doing. Any input would help

Don't ask for specifics, just general information. If you want specifics and someone offers the intel, privately message them to swap. I appreciate it. I obviously don’t live in Colorado so I’m in no way familiar with the state or its hunting. I lived there for about 2 years back in 2016 but never had the chance to go hunting. I’m just curious on the area and if it’s even worth making a trip out there to scout and hunt.

I appreciate it. I obviously don’t live in Colorado so I’m in no way familiar with the state or its hunting. I lived there for about 2 years back in 2016 but never had the chance to go hunting. I’m just curious on the area and if it’s even worth making a trip out there to scout and hunt.

I don't live there either so it feels overwhelming to go hunting in a different place that you may have never seen before in person. My first time was in 2024 and we didn't come home with anything to fill the freezer but the information and experience we gained was worth it. I'm not familiar with that area myself and in no way am I an expert but I would do as much research as you can on how much public land there, access to it and what time of year you are going in relation to the elevation. For every pin you have on your mapping app, have multiple backup pins for each spot. Also you can only do so much with e scouting also, so planning on using a day or two before hunting might be beneficial to. Like I said not an expert, just what I have learned from others.

I'm curious how you decided to OTC unit 22. I'm sure you know there are other units that may offer better opportunities.

From what I looked up, and I just started looking things up about Colorado hunting units yesterday so I only got so much info so far but from what I was seeing unit 22 has the most public land with 73% and the other unit was 12,24,60 and 72. I’m not to sure which one would be worth choosing just yet

Lots of information here just start digging and reading stats Colorado does a pretty good job providing decent information it seems.
