I'm looking at the San Juan near Dolores and I've got enough points to get a mulie tag either season (2). I've only hunted the area one other time and it was 2nd season and WARM, so I was thinking of going third. Any preference in the southwest corner for deer?

3rd rifle is always better, IMO. Jut make sure there is public land down low in the unit you hunt

I hunted in 711 2 years ago in the 3rd and seen way more elk than deer. They area got some heavy snows opening day and I seen more deer by Mancos/Cortez (Hwy 160 area) than up higher around the Dolores River. The 3rd season will be over a full moon. I did run across some deer tracks by Lone Mesa which is 9000'

I personally would hunt the 3rd down in the steep oakbrush.

2nd season is more miss than hit IMO. Been in those units a couple times for 2nd deer season and wasn't impressed. Saw more elk than deer.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I'm gonna put in for 3rd and buy an OTC bull tag. Should increase my odds of bringing home meat significantly.
