I'm so tired of this. Seems every time I go to use the lantern one of the mantels has broken off. They are just tooooooo fragile.

Wouldn't a fine mesh wire mantel work? They would have to work more than a day or two !! Are they available? Do I need to get a patent and start to make some real $$ for a change?

Get after it. You won't know until you try. Send me some samples I will test them for you and give a review. I like your line of thinking but honestly how is Coleman gonna make money on extras if you invent something like that. They probably already have a patent for it but know its not a good idea to send it to market. They make butt loads of money off those mantles I am sure.

I've had mantles last for a long time, maybe a couple seasons.
I pack my landern in a plastic bucket with a lid. It sits on a piece of foam cushion in bottom of the bucket, and I wrap an old towel around it so it doesn't bounce around inside the bucket.
They are fragile. Handle them carefully and they last a long time.

I bashed one of those god forsaken Coleman mantle lanterns up in a fit of rage one night in camp last year after they pissed me off one too many times. No, not really, but I would have if the kids weren't around. :D I did toss mine in the trash on the way home and not long after picked up one of the Coleman battery-powered lanterns that I can recharge in the truck everyday. This is the one I have:

Works great so far after a year of mild use -- plenty bright enough for me, the kids dig the yellow nightlight, no spilling gas, and of course no friggin mantels to burn up or tie on. Plus I bet the fluorescent bulb will make Al Gore happy. Go try one out.

I use the gold tip, gold circle, whatever they are called mantles. I rarely have them break anymore. I think the ones in my tent lantern have been good for a couple of years or better.
