Chukar Dog Injury

IMG_2327.jpegThe pups will be four weeks old this weekend. They have grown from just under 8 ounces to 4 pounds. The first few weeks were a little stressful with concerns on health and trying to keep two puppies warm. A litter can warm itself easier by laying in a mob. At one point my wife reminded me that I said pups were fun. She was stressed.

We weigh daily and bought formula a few weeks ago to help the male gain weight.

Pups have matured enough that major concerns are gone. They still have a lot of growing to do.

They each have their own personalities. The female, Dot, is easy going and loves to cuddle. She spends a lot of time sleeping on human chests. She has two eye masks, dots on her ear and head.

The male, Jack, was born moving and has not stopped. If he’s not sleeping, he’s searching whelping box or walking around the house. He does not like to be held and will squirm until he is let down. Little stinker will get down to go lay on the floor at my feet versus being held on my chest. He’ll pick fights with Dot which he normally loses. Dot’s has a great game take down move she uses on him. Jack’s completely white except one little orange dot on an ear and a Hitler mustache. Color on both pups will continue to develop as the mature.IMG_2333.jpeg

Cady’s recovered from her surgery and is doing well. She was a good mom in the beginning but is more of an absentee mom now. I have to remind her occasionally to nurse the pups. She is watchful when we’re holding pups to keep track of them.

I’ll touch base again in a month or so.

Happy Friday puppy pics.

They’re both growing and developing personalities. Jack has grown from the runt to the biggest pup. Dot still has the dominant personality. I’ve been walking them outside in the yard. They have gone from being timid to asking to go outside. Neighbors have realized we have pups and come over to see them. Everyone loves holding puppies.

Puppies, daffodils and elk.

Pups are growing and raising hell. Dot’s already trying to run away in her searching. She’s going to be a petite dog probably a weight in the high 30s. Jack’s an easy going teddy bear. He’ll be 50 pound dog by my guess.

Thanks for sharing this story. I have seen some issues like most upland birds hunters with dogs in 40+ years but never this. I did have 90 pound lab bloat 2 miles from the truck dusky grouse hunting (story for another thread), and have had dogs cliff out chasing chukars, always worried about one going off a cliff. Working dogs live very different lives than house pets. Good on you resolving the issue with Cady and the pups look awesome!

IMG_2611.jpegI should have update a few months ago but I’ve been avoiding it. Everything was fine with the pups until about a month ago. Jack became very sick. Vet determined he had renal kidney failure. She recommended we put him down that evening. I set up a vet appointment for the family to say goodbye to him after knowing him for three months. I was the last family member to walk into the vet room. Jack met me recovering enough to walk to me, tail wagging and begging for treats. Family was teary eyed and told me that Jack was coming home. We’ve been giving him nightly fluid injections to help his kidneys for the past six weeks. He ebbs and flows but is deteriorating. He gets lots of treats, yogurt and anything else he wants. I don’t think he’s going to make it more than a month or two. It’s been heartbreaking.

Dot is Dot. I had a wellness check with blood panels done on her after I found out about Jack. She’s perfectly healthy. Dot’s a strong, vigorous puppy. I’ve been taking her on walks and playing with retrieving. She’s a little puppy crazy and jumps into everything head first. She’s going to be the right age in the fall to have a great learning season on wild birds.IMG_3497.jpegIMG_3122.jpeg

I had agreed to have pups last winter because my son wanted a pup from my dog Cady. With Jack’s illness, he’s won’t have a hunting dog again soon. I did some research and found him a litter from Cady’s sister. We picked up Ted yesterday. He was accepted by the other dogs easily. Ted moved right into causing problems with Dot.

I have an over abundance of dogs right now including a shorthair not in the setter pile pick. My wife and I have a goal of being back to two dogs in the house in 2026. My boys will be leaving for their own adventures. Jack can stay as long as he wants.

Sorry to hear about Jack. Poor pup.

A good lookin lot of pups though. The pup in the front seat looks like it would get away with quite a bit around my wife.

Dogs. I just don’t understand life without them.

Blessings to Jack and the family. There is simply nothing like the love of a pup.

Oh that’s a heartbreaker about jack. I hope you, your family and the other dogs do well whenever his time comes

Same. We’ve been dogless for 3 years and that’s too long.
Lost our 15 Y.O. Brittany two weeks ago. Rough times 'round here. I got agreement that we will not get another pup until MRS' TKR rehab is done.
I get to choose! I would love to get a Drahthaar, but I have no business owning a high energy dog. It will end up being another rescue. That's what we do.

Dogs and breeding them--things don't always go the way you want, and it can be heartbreaking. We bred once and won't ever again due to problems that developed during birth--which led to not enough milk, and we ended up hand feeding all the pups. Fun for a few days for the whole family then it became a real chore. But the bond created was a hard one to break when placing the pups. Lost one of the pups early that never really thrived. Lost the one we kept at ten from gastric torsion. When driving him in distress to the emergency vet I knew it was the last drive we'd ever take.

Losing dogs sure ain't easy no matter how you lose them.

I feel like I used sucky grammar here.
Not that if we got a Drahthaar it would be a rescue. I mean that we will end up getting another rescued dog, like we always do.

Sad update. Jack was declining this week and last night he started going downhill quick. I won’t give the details but my nurse wife said it was time. We had Jack put down last night.

Heartbreaking. He was a birddog in every aspect except for his bad kidneys. I could see his potential that never had a chance to be developed.

Jack’s not the first nor last dog death I’ve experienced but it still sucks.

On a positive note, I woke up this morning to Dot licking my face. Cady was curled up on my bed sleeping and Ted was running around trying to find something to bite. Life goes on.

Even thou you knew the odds, it still hurts. The tough part that comes with having animals in your life is their mortality.

Recently, I learned that one of my setters has spinal stenosis, and I had to put down my 15 year old setter.

Life goes on, I am getting a setter puppy in a month, or so.

Love to you and yours.

Sorry for your loss. Those who have been there know the pain. Thanks for bringing us along on the journey, which does nonetheless march on....
