Here's my new huntin' dawg at 8 weeks of age. He's already pointing, retrieving and tracking wounded birds. He's a Pudelpointer, just like my 11 year old dog, Scout. His name is Jem (Scout's brother in "To Kill a Mockingbird").

Congrats on the new pup Ithaca. I'm sure he'll be a winner.

Nothing like puppy breath to bring out the kid in anyone.

Nice looking pup. Its funny that you have named your dogs after characters from "To Kill a Mockingbird"....I named my dog Atticus, because of Atticus Finch!! :)

I know you ignore my posts, but I must say that is a great looking puppy !
Good luck with him.

Gesh, Leave it to Ithica to Wound birds out of season for his dog to train ;)

Hey Ith, I got that Book BTW, I haven't read it but it's on my list of thigns to do .

Papa, You'll find lots of useful info in the book. Maybe you'll even learn how to hunt bears!:D

A-con and everyone else, Thanks for the nice comments.

We go to the German Shorthair Pointer Club training sessions every Thursday evening and help people learn how to train pointing dogs. We have many members who bring their homing pigeons to use and we also have "kill" pigeons to shoot as part of the training. All I have to do is tie the wings on a kill pigeon so it can't fly and let it run off and Jem will track it.

The Shorthair Club has a very active hunting dog adoption program for anyone looking for a dog-----usually they are German Shorthairs, but sometimes we hear about other hunting dogs that are available. Some of the dogs are real good hunting dogs/family pets that for some reason can't be kept by their owner any longer.

For instance, I just recently helped place a three year old Shorthair with a new family. The dog belonged to an older gentleman who was dying of cancer and he wanted to make sure it had a good home. He actually had three well trained Shorthairs and was giving away two of them. His wife was going to keep one. Last week we had a two year old Lab who's owner was being job transferred to a city. A month ago we had a Brittany Spaniel who's owner was being transferred to a new job in England.

If anyone wants to be notified about dogs that come available they can contact me or the Club. http://www.gspcidaho.org/

You don't have to own a Shorthair to be a member. Anyone with a pointing dog can be a member. If anyone ever wants to go watch the training sessions just contact me. We can take an untrained dog and have it steady to wing and shot in about 8 weeks.
