This type of camera trick is called "forced perspective". It's the same thing that people do in pictures like this:

The guy in the picture is actually holding the snake out towards the camera with a piece of wood, so it's quite a bit smaller. Which is still just waay too much rattlesnake. I used to bale a lot of hay as a kid, and the damn things would lie in the windrows, and when you'd get out to work on the baler...
 
Thanks, JDG, sometimes I know what I'm thinking and trying to express, but it eludes me at the time. I guess it's the results of the strokes I've suffered.
