The feather barbules and hooklets have not filled in yet. Thus the fiber look.

A photo from this evenings walk. I haven't been in to see these falls in at least 5 years.

A Red-breasted nuthatch feeding on a Jack Pine Cone. There are some people that believe that you need to to expose these cones to fire to make them open up for seed exposure and dispersal. That's not the case this summer with the continuous hot weather we have been having. The warm air and sunlight have generated enough heat to have the cones open up.

This nuthatch is taking advantage of these freshly opening cones for a possible food source.


And is successful at it.

I bumped into a Sandhill Crane family today.

 

[huronmtns]

Adult sparrow was feeding the juvenile away from the nest site. It seems like there are a lot of adult birds moving around with the juveniles very close to them learning the species survival elements.
