Like most years, the Congressional appropriations language has the horse and burro "rider" that prohibits the full implementation of the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act.

Unlike most years, there is a real chance public opposition can remove this rider language and we can manage excess horse and burros and get them to their appropriate management levels.

Working with HOWL, we created a call to action directed to the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior to remove this language. Please consider voicing your support for this effort so we can restore our public land habitat.

thanks,

Good luck! But last I knew fertility control isn't very long lasting, is costly, and is even harder to implement or be effective when herds get large.

Seems to me you'd need a huge added appropriation to even dive in.

Are you counting on donations?

i'm curious if some of the herds are down to appropriate levels how much fertility control would be needed since gathering a few horses every few years would be much easier but also with a more manageable number will it be easier to implement?

obviously those are questions for down the road that we may or may not ever get to see

I think you misunderstood what this call to action is.

This is a letter asking Congress to euthanize horses and burros in holding facilities that are over 10 years old. That will make room for more animals to be put in holding facilities. Then once horse and burros on public lands are at AML, use PZP to keep the herd in check.

No I got that, I guess I'm not sure PZP had a great track record of success. My info is pretty dated though thus the question. I'm all for euthanization, for what that's worth.

They ought to open up the slaughter houses again. Dogs and cats need food too. Make ALPO great again.

Coincidentally, this ran in today's WaPo: https://wapo.st/4fqI25h

Can't imagine wild mustang would be my first choice but I figure @WildWill could throw it on the smoker long enough for it to make tolerable pulled horse sammiches.

thanks,
I completely agree—this rider has been limiting real progress for far too long. Our wild horse and burro populations need responsible, science-based management that protects both the animals and the land. I’ll be reaching out to the Appropriations Subcommittee to voice my support for removing this language."
