On Sunday I stepped off my horse wrong after roping a run back calf in the morning and sprained my ankle good. Worked the rest of the day on horseback and ran the ancient squeeze chute for 48 head. Drove home 2 hours and made a doctor appointment at urgent care on Monday.

Well after a quick exam and in house X-rays they showed me a spiral fracture just above the distal end of the fibula.
Got an orthopedic appointment next week and a new walking boot. This is the first time I’ve ever been on crutches in my 51 years.

Well now what? Any thoughts from others who have dealt with this?

I broke mine about 20 years ago. I was in my 30's. I had screws and a plate installed. I was in a cast for 8 weeks, then 4 weeks in a walking boot. It was may when i broke mine. I was very limited in hunting the following fall. By the following spring, I was back to new. It still aches when storms move in.

I broke Fibula skiing at Big Sky almost 38 years ago. Stubborn, I skied down the backside after yard sale crash, took lift up and skied down front side and headed to emergency. Mine was more of horizontal break..6 weeks in a cast. Good as new.
That spiral looks worse.

Had a major sprain and minor break of the distal fibula in July. Your break looks more severe than mine, but the sprain has been more problematic. Ankle ligaments operated like a slinky for about 4 months before they started getting some stability back. I'm making solid progress finally though. Just immobilization for me.

Injury happened on a Monday and I flew to Belize for my honeymoon on Friday. I was back to work 2 weeks later in my tall Crispis.

Busted mine about 20 years ago. Best thing you can do is watch your weight. It’s easy to pack on some pounds with a busted leg and it makes the recovery worse if you do.

I’ve broken both of mine playing hockey. Left was about midway up, minor spiral fracture from crashing into the boards in an awkward position. That one healed up pretty easily.

Right was from a puck impact that broke the end completely off. That ankle already had major issues and has now been completely replaced. Recovery from that has been quite a bit more challenging.

Broke mine mountain biking. Plate and screws installed. Hiking boot selection is a bit more hit and miss. Drink lots of pineapple juice. I was told it helps heal bones faster. I like it anyway but my doc said the bone appeared to heal over faster than most so whet the heck.

I broke mine mountain biking in the Daniel Boone National park . Had to walk three miles out with my bike then drive my 5.0 5 speed Mustang home to Michigan after the hospital visit .
Grocery shopping with crutches suck !

If you can talk them into a bone stimulator, it will heal faster. Probably be a difficult sell though.

Fractured my distal fibula and tibia the Monday before Thanksgiving. Spent the first week wearing a boot, using crutches, and keeping weight off the leg. I was finally able to see an orthopedic specialist last Monday.. There wasn't much they could do. He told me to walk on it if I wanted, ditch the boot if I wanted. It's not 100% back to normal but it feels much better. Follow up x-rays in two weeks will tell me how its progressing.

I'm just impressed you were playing hockey at age 59. Most people have taken up golf well before then.

See i totally get this....I'm using one crutch and putting 25-50% weight on it and not in pain.

This is my main reason for talking to the ortho. That and the Bunion arthritis i saw on the film.....If I'm going to be in a cast or boot for multiple weeks, then they should just do the bunion surgery while I'm already lame. I can tell it is going to be more of a problem in the future. I've got 90 bucks left on my deductible for 2025....

I might have broken mine once when I fell off a log crossing a creek. I never went to a doctor, just laced my boot up tighter. It hurt like a sombitch for quite a while but gradually got better. After about two years it seemed to be back to normal.

Good thing it didn't hurt much longer than that because I was about ready to go have a doctor take a look at it.
