Bowhunters - not a big impact?

To compensate, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks proposed issuing only 500 archery-only pronghorn hunting permits in Region 3

What does this mean since it’s a statewide 900 tag? I understand the following portion about certain districts in 3 not being eligible for the archery only hunt opportunity but how are they limiting the 500 in those areas? Call-in quota?

I love bowhunting, but it takes a big toll in MT, particularly for antelope and elk. I’m amazed at how many guys I talk to that don’t seem to have any concern about flinging arrows and wounding. Im not going to be a total hypocrite. I’ve wounded before with quick shot opportunities I shouldn’t have taken and felt pretty shitty about it.

Me too, unfortunately. I make myself remember these situations that I chose every time I go out. I think twice and three times now before any shot. The animal deserves it IMO.

FWP did a study years ago in the Madison that suggested that for every elk killed one was lost by bowhunters.
I would like to see the entire stunt that is bowhunting go away.
I used to get the yearly stats by a local outfitter off a well known ranch locally. Their overall recovery rate over the years was less than 50%. Going by memory, quite a bit less.

All my friends bow hunt. I used to. I'm for bowhunting and bowhunters (though you could make a pretty good case a compound bow, while a vicious little machine, is not really a bow - but I digress lol). I got a bit of grief on another thread for suggesting a hunter in Montana should have to pick his weapon. Rifle or bow - not both. I'm still of that opinion. I think it would go a long way to improving the quality of hunting in MT, since FWP can't seem to get that done.

Punch me in the face if you think I'm wrong - I can take it :)

I honestly think hunting all around is getting worse for animals based on numbers. People getting into hunting that don’t have any idea what it takes to be successful. Too many guys go buy a new bow, all the crap, and shoot the range a little and expect to make a shot hunting. I tell everyone I practice any kind of shooting with to expect a 30% “oh shit” factor. Shooting paper or a foam target hundreds of times doesn’t help a bunch when your heart is beating out of your chest, your decision making is lacking and everything goes out the window.

That said, at least the guys that practice have a chance. I know guys that hunt that barely practice, archery or firearm. They don’t even have a baseline to fall back to. One guy in particular I’m related to consistently takes 300 yard shots and never hits anything, blames his ammo, scope, gun, anyone who’s close, but when asked he usually shoots 1-2 rounds the night before the season to make sure his gun is “on”. He called me a month ago to look for a buck he was sure he hit, when he told me how far I just laughed and he got pissed. No blood, found the bullet impact at 325, I told him it’s too far for him to be shooting because he doesn’t practice and he told me his new scope is junk. I told him at least he got lucky and had a clean miss and didn’t cripple the poor buck. I don’t think he’ll call me for help anymore.

Only reason he has the bow is due to not being able to have firearms. I saw a thing saying he is trying to get his rights to have a gun back
