I snug my gun up in a vise with clean padded jaws like this. Makes both hands readily available. If I had to soak the bore with something I hold it vertical, plug the muzzle end with a cork [and catch bottle under it] and fill it up. A friend says that a good way to remove a carbon ring is to fill the bore with Slip2000 and let if go for 24 hours or so.
