I have my Grandfather's on Dad's side. A 1947 Model 99 in .300 Sav. I've killed a few deer with it now. It had first chance at my moose tag this last year if'n I didn't connect with my bow (which I did). I had been working up a load for the classic Moose bullet a 150 gr Partition. For deer I found that it really like's 125 ballistic tips.
I had the exact same thought as to which scope. I topped it with a 60's-70's vintage K3. It would have been sacrilege to drill and tap a virgin receiver so years ago I purchased a Lightfoot Mount made by a gentleman over on 24hrcampfire whose screen name is actually Lightfoot. He takes a leupold one piece mount and welds on fore and aft to utilize the rear receiver screws and the dovetail in the rear iron. Reblue's it and is a great way to attach a scope. I think its a better system then the old Stith mounts that are rare and command a heavy sum for a nice condition one nowadays.
It has the most sentimental value of all my firearms and I'll go to my son eventually. .300 Sav is also in reality my favorite caliber for deer.
We weren't a family of hunter's growing up. Not sure when my Grandfather purchased the rifle but recal a story he was invited to hunt black bears in northern MN at one time and thats what he ended up with. He passed when Dad was only 18 or 19 and it sat in dad's closet for years and years. We had family back the last summer and had an afternoon get together with some shooting at my Sister and Brother-in-laws.
