Bitterroot Forest takes first step in launching large west-side project

A proposed Bitterroot National Forest project would examine whether 150,000 acres from Darby to Stevensville could be treated to reduce wildfire risk.

Hope this continues into other areas thinning would assist mitigating fire exposure to family homes, etc.

The plan is promote a “shared stewardship approach” that would allow the work to occur across public and private boundaries. Winthers said the Bitterroot Forest will work closely with the NRCS, DNRC and Bitter Root RC&D to accomplish that goal.
