I’ve seen quite a few mastication projects around me in the last few years on university, private and forest service property. It does look pretty nice afterwards. Biggest issues I’ve seen are that it has been fairly limited to areas near a road and relatively flat areas.

The forestry drum has been around for a while. Always thought biggest hurdle is topo issues, including rocks/boulders. But this seems to be a good first step towards addressing the limitations.

I did see a smaller remote control one doing some roadside/power line clean up the other day

Hopefully they can evolve to a fully automated version like the Roomba. Avoid catastrophic crashes/falls and work around those dangers. That “should” help habitat reclamation and restoration with replanting with native plants/grasses.

A recent presentation by American Prairie described the collaborative program(s) between American Prairie and National Geographic environmental science to monitor, study, analyze, and improve habitat for flora and fauna on the American Prairie lands in Montana. It highlighted how management of bison and other wildlife and the reclamation of prairie grasslands will work hand in hand with the science of what is shown to be best for the habitat and the overall landscape. It appears to be a very promising collaboration.
