Big ol Burban

Ugh, went to install the cam yesterday. It didn’t fit, the machine shop put them in the block in the wrong order, there is 3 different sizes. By the time it got to the third bearing you couldn’t have beat it in with a hammer.

Took it back and they swapped bearings. Picked it up today and test fit the cam before I left. It was super tight and told them it was wrong. They threw a fit I questioned it and told me to take it elsewhere then.

Ok, then refund me the money I’ve spent here and we can just cut ties.

Here is pics of what the installed cam bearing looked like.

When I was a kid there was a machine shop on every corner of Flint , not anymore.

Yep, Terry used to be THE guy. The walls are full of sprint car winning photos. He was at the top of his game.

Age catches us all, he is dealing with something and not able to pay attention to detail anymore.

A quick review of google shows I’m not the only one recently.

It was a dying art with CNC, you either heavily invest in equipment to stay competitive or close shop. There is also shortage of kids interested to take over for the old timers.

Hence, why I’m exposing my kids to it. There is a need and a job for any kid willing to get dirty.

I used this as a lesson to both of them about attention to detail and customer service.

Why not a crate? mtmuley

Wow! :(
When I was in high school I installed my own cam bearings after we went and borrowed a cam bearing installation tool from our local machine shop.
You would think a machine shop would know why the bearings come in a specific order in the box.

He knows and has done 1000s, I think he took it for granted that the box is supposed to come in order and never verified. He never checked any of his work. Had he, it would never of left the shop, but it left three times incorrect.

If you’re looking for another shop consider DL Automotive in State College, PA. Dick builds engines for sprint and drag cars, pulling tractors and diesel monsters. Great reputation and seriously detail oriented. My uncle and cousin have been doing business with him for decades with v8 pulling tractor engines and recently had a Duramax rebuilt.

I have another local shop, they just take forever because it’s the shop supporting all the drag racers. They build mild to crazy wild nitro. That is where I dropped off the block to get made into the 417 stroker. I ended up ordering the tool and new bearings from Summit for this project.
