Anyone reading this in the future and wondering why did he shoot a cow on a glory tag, here is why.
I shot a bugle magazine cover type 6x6 on opening day with my bow. I got so excited by him that I went plumb stoopid with elk fever. Completely forgot my fundamentals and shanked the shot into his guts. I had pulled up my sleeve and it was caught in my bow string when I released. Broad daylight at 41 yards. I shot for 30. No clue on the hit except stomach matter on the vanes. 3 of us searched the next day and covered about a mile grid. No blood just his tracks where he kept stumbling in the pine needles. He crossed into a prairie and we lost him. That’s gonna haunt me.
This is a management hunt for a specific population problem on a Military installation. I was told to continue to hunt by the folks here and I chose to chase cows. I screwed up my chance and didn’t want to take bull opportunities away from the other Vets.
It was my choice and I feel I made the best of it.
