I just turned 40 this year. Is there any state that I have a real chance at a moose or goat tag. Before I am 60. This will be my first year. I mean lower 48.

Honestly probably not. Tough tags to get. Your only hopes would be either a pure random luck with buying tickets to a super tag (basically where a state sells raffle tickets to get a real sought after tag without preference points) or have enough money you can buy an auctioned off tag from certain states.

For most people both of those aren't too realistic seeing as those auction tags generally can go for over $100k....

Yes. See my response in your other post.

I agree with others, though, that you don’t have a great chance if you’re looking for a bull tag in a great unit

The goat’s gonna be a long-shot. Moose in Idaho will be your better shot if you commit to spending all that up-front money every year and keep with it. There are some not-too-hard-to-draw moose bull tags in the Gem State. Twenty years of applying for one of those should get you a tag at some point.

Edit: Read below about the NR cap. That detail escaped my shallow mind. 😃

If you are OK with Cow moose, Non-residents are in a unique position in CO where they can draw with less than 3 points (just the way it works with allocations). Take a look through the cow tags in the draw reports (MFXXXXXXXXX).

Outside of that - agree with the others that the odds are long, but over 20 years, you do have a shot. For reference, I was about your age when I started (not that long ago) applying out of CO with a similar goal. It's more than likely going to be a costly endeavor, but I was willing to come out short financially for the chance at a tag.

well maybe Im wrong but Idaho not having a point system is the best, bet you have the same chance as anyone else
goat ,sheep, moose its all luck of the draw

Bull moose in ID as non-resident is under 1 in 20 odds. Ignore the odds per unit for past years as the NR cap is two-staged: Up to 10% cap for all ID moose tags then also up to 1 tag (or 10% over 20 tags in the unit) per moose unit. A unit may look like had 4 non-resident apply and 1 drew so has 25% odds so is a better choice for apply this year than the unit that had 4 NR apply and none drew. Not the case. Last year has no direct impact on how the NR tags will be awarded in various units this year. Identify a unit with harvest rates you can live with and plenty of public land or a good guide, whatever floats your boat, and apply.

Mountain goat in ID for NR is not likely in 20 years. Bighorn sheep in ID is highly unlikely in 20 years. In ID, you can apply to either moose or goat or sheep or you can instead apply for elk/deer/pronghorn. You have to buy the NR annual license. Choose wisely.

I can think of no other Big 3 NR tag with expected draw odds in less than 20 years in the Lower 48 other than of course the Unlimited Bighorn units in MT.

AK has units which are better than 1 in 20 draw odds for NR sheep, goat, and moose. Some OTC tags as well. Transportation issues exist if go unguided and in some cases have to use a guide or have a close relative in AK ready to go on the hunt with you.

yes Idaho is random. However you have to consider the non resident cap, which may mean your drawing dead. You also have to consider the cost of NR license yearly. So what you looking at is about 200 dollars a year for a chance at tag with odds significantly less than 1% for sheep tags, Providing you didnt get cap screwed first. From 1 % to 2.5% for a mountain goat tag and slight better odds for NR moose tag. In any even it easy to go 10 plus years without a tag with substantial outlay of cash.

I look at at is as expensive raffle ticket yearly, if I draw excellent ...if not then in the mean time I keep heading to Canada and Alaska to hunt.
