What is the best resource to determine road status on public lands? I was hoping to find some places that they may have closed off some roads. My thinking is this might limit the human traffic in a particular area. Is there any GIS data out there, ie. google earth overlay or something similar?

If it's USFS land, search for the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). BLM will usually maintain a web page listing road status, but that varies greatly by office/area.

Here in NM ,BLM has worked with the state lands office & FS on a map system that shows open gates to access roads. Green or red dots mark open or closed gates. I double check with local office to see if it is right. If gate is suppossed to be open & isn't I can use this info. & go.

USFS publishes quite a few geo-referenced pdf maps of their travel plans. I use them on my phone with the PDF Maps reader app that allows me to see in real time where I am on the map. Very useful and the maps are free to download!
