I have been using a Tri-Tronics Judge for the last 18 years and it has been a great unit. It has finally called it quits and I am now in the market for a replacement. Not having been in the market for a new collar for quite some time, I about fell off my chair when I saw what the top end units are going for now. There are also quite a few different brands on the market now as well. My budget is in the $250 to $350 range, I like the idea of the pager mode, and 1/2 mile should be plenty as both of my dogs stay within 1/4 mile of me. Thanks for your help.

I know a few professional trainers and they seem to like sportdog. I really like that the remote is compact/light enough to hang on a lanyard around your neck. I currently use a tritronics upland, and have had great luck but you are looking closer to 500 for it.

Tritronics used to be the best of the best a long time ago, but things have changed and electronics have got so much cheaper. I don't think you need to spend that much anymore and I still have my old Tritronics with a dead battery that would almost cost more to fix than buy a new make.. I have a DT, it works great, my only gripe is the prongs are a little short for a thick haired lab and I have to have it on him pretty tight for it to work but most of the time the buzz mode is all he needs to start listening again.

Schmalts,
Which DT model do you have? I have a German Shorthair and a Vizsala. So thick hair is not a problem. JWP58 do you have the same problem with the probes being too short.
I just checked the DT website and they have longer probes for sale $7 for a pair of 3/4 inch and 1 inch. Standards probe length is 5/8th in.

I bought a Tri-tronics Field 90 after years with a Judge and several other Tri-tronics collars. They are cheaper now and just as good as they always were. I ran pointers and labs professionally for 15 years. None compare to Tri-tronics for quality. The field 90 has both continous and momentary stimulation as well as a tone. You can get one for $325 on ebay. The batteries are user replacable and you can add another collar later. In my opinion, it's the best option.

Sheff

I appreciate all of the input. You guys have given me a lot to think about. MNElkNut, I am not a firearms instructor, but I am a middle school teacher. I doubt that I could convince anyone that I needed the shock collar for my work, without losing my job. Thanks again.

The DT 1820 h2o is on my short list. Along with the Dogtra 1900 Ncp Field Master and a couple of the TriTronics models. My friend has a Sportdog and is happy with that brand as well. Lots of options.

My Sportdog with added collar ability works well for me. My GSHP is going deaf so the "beep mode" is less successful in getting his attention. The English pointer needs less stimulation so I have to decrease the juice for her with a roll of the dial on the controller unit.

From the title of the post I was trying to figure out if it was the best electric chain saw, blanket, ...well, you fill in the rest.
