Best meat analog for pack training?

Sand bag. Buy several, redistribute the sand to variety of weights, progress up in weight during the training process.

I use bags of wild bird food. Fairly dense, cheap, no smells, and use it during the winter.

It’s available in 10, 15, 20 pound bags so I can easily add or remove bags depending on where I’m going and the distance.

Finally, I figured I’d I tweak my ankle or knee, I can easily dump it out without much issue. Who’s going to complain about bird food in the woods?

I usually just fill with actual gear then add some various weights. One caution to this method is whatever you use - be sure to get it all out of your pack prior to the hunt. I found a 2lb ankle weight in the bottom of my pack 4 miles from trailhead and 2k ft elevation gain on day 3 of my last hunt in Wyoming when I stopped for lunch.

I’ve got a 61lbs granite river rock shaped like an elk quarter that I use. Living by the Yellowstone, you can find whatever weight and shape rock you want. Packs pretty nicely. I then carry a 10lbs kettle bell in my hand to simulate a bow or rifle. I’m in recovery from a major injury though and highly motivated.

I like the non-food ideas (I don't need to attract anymore mice to my house/garage. Salt seems like a viable option and cheap. I don't have any ground up rubber lying around...or kids, at least not that I can carry on my back.

Mice like the rice bags

50 pound bad of quickcrete, put in in a contractor bag and wrap with duct tape completely. I hike 2-3 days a week the last two summers and it has not leaked. I role a towel up and put in the bottom of the meat shelf and then concrete. It is not perfect but neither is a bag of meat.

You mean to tell me, none of you pussies take a full elk quarter out of the freezer every day and throw it in your pack to train? try harder wtf.
Nobody cares, work harder. Just run up the local hill with a rock every day.

In all seriousness I really like the softener salt idea. I always just threw free weights wrapped in a hoodie or a towel.

Water softener salt for me. The bags have a nice handle on top to help put it in/remove from pack and the plastic is thick enough to not tear (and if it ever does who cares).

I’ve had the same bag for like 15 years (don’t own a water softener).
