Are suppressors over rated?

As for hearing protection at the range, I use a pair of earbuds with Bluetooth that allows me to listen to the radio or music at the same time.

Currently picturing this yokel cluelessly bebopping around the range, flagging everyone within 50 yards while blasting "Hip to be Square" into his eardrums.

I've seen some integrally suppressed .22 rifles. Not sure if this is possible on a centerfire, would think if it was someone would have done this as it adds no length to the rifle. Not sure about weight because I wasn't concerned about weight when I saw the rifle at the time.

Although not as common they do make integrally suppressed centerfire barrels. I often think about getting one in .308 as my primary hunting gun. Pretty sure @p_ham put one together but I may be confusing him with someone else on here.

It can be done. I've only seen one in.308 forget the model but it was designed for CIA use back in the day.

This week was the first time shooting suppressed for me and my son.

It was a joy. It helped that it was on a custom rifle but it was really nice.

I’ve been meaning to get one (or 2) for a while now and keep thinking they are going to pass something taking away the registration requirement but I’m probably going to bite the bullet and get one now.

It took me quite a while to bite the bullet, but now, I have 5, 2 30 cal, one .223 and 2 rimfire. Recoil reduction is real, still get the super sonic crack but the suppressor takes away the concussion of the expanding gases. Don't own anything with a break and never will. Have shot a few and nope, not for me. The majority of my rifles are now threaded and shortened.

I'm fine with recoil and mostly deaf (only at 49) - but I wanted one for the kids to help keep their hearing.

They are great for recoil reduction - and "felt" recoil. Both kids think a suppressed 6.5X55 kicks less than a .243 (although that is not the case - but who am I to argue).

I've been around 6ish deer shot suppressed and 3 elk. There is a little difference in the deer reaction - but the Elk reaction is very different. I know it's only n=3, but in all cases the herd walked away. If needed/wanted - I could have gotten an elk from the same herd with little movement.

I'm not threading my .338 Win Mag - but the rifles the kids use will have it.

To each is their own. I don't own one. Shot several guns with them. If I was a range guy then yes. I am not and only shoot a few rounds, sometimes only 1 a year.

I am not YET recoil sensitive. I have shot two exact calibers one with and without a suppressor a couple times side by side and no difference in my shooting. Maybe one day I will and it will change my thoughts.

But they don't suck compared to muzzle brakes if your standing next to them

Honestly for coyotes and hogs I consider them needed but for deer elk or moose not really which maybe bear but still probably not to needed also around houses there nice but the main thing is why are they overrated? Is it because Hollywood? Is it because of video games? Is it because they look scary? Nope see before you couldnt get them much and so Hollywood didn't have them so they made people think they were overly quiet so everyone was scared of them then they became more available and everyone went and bought them because they thought it would make there gun have no sound and turns out it indeed does have sound so long story short for hunting are they needed? 50/50. For target shooting? Sure there good but due to not having them and then getting complete access to them has made everyone flock to them hence overration

The constant ringing in my left ear wishes I had one 27 years ago. Never met a single person that has actually shot a suppressor say they aren’t worth it. I won’t shoot a rifle without being suppressed anymore.

They are also an amazing tool for teaching new shooters.

Yep. But more than once I've seen pro suppressor users indicate those of us that don't care to have one as ignorant or about to lose our hearing. Maybe shooters that have the "ringing" should have been aware of hearing protection years ago. But yeah, I have shot suppressed rifles. Just where I am at so far. mtmuley
