About 4 years ago my wife and I decided we wanted to offer the youth at our church something beside basketball. We are an inner city church on the "west side" of Charleston, WV. We had recently built a new gymnasium and wanted to take full advantage of it. My wife and I came up with a faith based archery program that uses the same equipment as the Archery in the Schools program, we call it "True Path Archery". We were running the program during the summers and drawing in 25 to 30 kids each week. In the winter we were doing the Upwards basketball program and drawing about the same participant numbers. This year we decided we would do archery in the winter instead of basketball.

The DNR contacted me last year and asked if they could use our facility to provide training to teachers for the Archery in the Schools program. In return they offered our church a handful of spots for certification if we were interested. Myself and 4 other church members took advantage of the training in order to give our own program a little more street cred. We advertised for a month leading up to the program and doubled up on bows, arrow curtains and targets expecting a crowd about double what we would normally have in the summer.

This past Saturday was our first session and we had 120 kids show up and register. Thankfully we were prepared. It was an awesome time and the kids loved. I have a feeling we will probably grow another 20 or 30 next week when some of the kids tell a friend about it.

The program is based off of the Archery in the Schools system but we add in a devotion and snack time for the kids. We will be splitting sessions this week to accomodate for parking and building capacity. A great problem to have when you are a church trying to grow your congregation to make up for the generation that is slowly dying off.

Thats fantastic! We have the NASP program in our school. Its very popular with the kids. Last year we took some of our kids to the national shoot in Kentucky. It was said the NASP program would have more kids signed up, than little League baseball this year.

It wouldn't surprise me. We have to qualify for the state tournaments now because they can't handle so many kids. They had to narrow it down to 600 kids.

WVH that is great and you are an asset to your community.
In my Perfect community, we would have field archery ranges where there are now golf courses...

That's awesome.

I started shooting competitive archery when I was 12.

23 years later I still shoot and hunt with people I met there.

That's a ton of kids and a lot of real little ones too!!! Good for you and all those involved!!!

We had 39 kids from 5 - 7 years old. I have 4 mini Genesis bows we use. They will go down to about 6 pounds. My 5 year old daughter can knock the arrows, draw (good form too) and release all by herself and pound the 10 ring. I had to convince many little 6 and 7 year old boys twice her size they could pull it back to their mouth :D

If you look in the first picture for a little girl with a pink hoody that is mine. :)

Those kids didn't make a peep the whole time I was up in front of them giving them the safety and instruction run down. They were so focused on archery and excited to shoot. You could hear a pin drop in a room with 120 kids and their parents too!

Yes, awesome indeed WV! Great to see your post!
Better than senate bills, BS about safety and people bitchin'!
KUDOS man - keep up the great work!

Very cool program - nice to see. When I first saw the title - I was thinking of shooting arrows from the pews...

If you make safety instruction interesting and are animated with your presentation they will be all ears, but I am sure you already know that.
The brains of kids that age are likes sponges if they can learn something cool. Glad to see somebody putting forth the effort. Good luck to you.

I am not the greatest Christian at times and question a lot of things that go on in my head. I will say that this program is something God put on my heart as something that I could do for his church. I give him all the glory for the idea and ability and all the success to the volunteers. A few of the volunteers are my dad's hunting buddies. One of which hadn't been to church since he was a kid and I believe he got the most out of it. I just hope things like archery could bring in kids that were like me at that age. I could count on one hand how many times (less than 5) I had stepped into a church up to 7 years ago. My mom and dad now attend the same church partly because of needing volunteers for activities like this. They hadn't spent much time in a church in the last 40 years and now my father serves on the board and the buildings and properties committee and my mother helps with women's ministries.

God has been good to my family and this is a small piece of what I can do to repay him.

that's a great program for the kids. nice to give them a chance to learn a new sport and also occupy some of the winter nights. keep up the good work!!
