This year really surprised me. The drought is very real in the Sierras, but the choke cherry production is through the roof. I hunted a patch of choke cherries for six days since the season began, and saw from two to four bears every day in the thicket. I had two opportunities, but couldn’t make it happen either time. For day seven, I thought I’d check a trail camera elsewhere that had been active for a week and give the cherries a break. I had set it along a trail that had well worn paw imprints, but had no idea that it was also facing a bear rubbing post.

The camera showed bears walking by every single day, with many bears standing and scratching their backs. It really was a stroke of luck. I hunted that trail on day seven, and sure enough, a nice boar walked by at 12 yards. He saw movement when I drew back, but was intent on sniffing out the latest competitor along the trail, and that was all she wrote. He ran about 50 yards and I watched him breathe his last breath. The trail cam pics show him seconds before I shot.

Good luck to everyone this year!
