Spent 4 days on the Idaho side of the divide chasing bulls last week. Wife had the tag and she was determined to hold out for a "big one". Lots of elk and opportunities but no Mr. Right yet. Hope to get back up for a few days before the tag ends at end of month.

Walking out in the dark one night, we heard plenty of howling to go along with the tracks we crossed earlier in the day.

Best of luck to those still hunting!

Saw a set from at least two while out last weekend. They were melted in so probably a day or two old. No elk, no wolves 7 miles and one nice buck. I'm trying to get back up there to look for the wolves now that my elk tag is done.

One set so far. Tracks only got within about100 yards of the bull I left the night before. Maybe that peeing thing works! mtmuley

I've seen so many wolf tracks this year it is ridiculous. In the area I hunt I saw more this year than we ever have. I hunted for 5 days this past week, saw tracks in every single area I walked into in both the mornings and evenings, usually 6 or 7 sets.

Of course, surprise surprise, the elk numbers are way down in that area too. Before wolves came into this area 800 cow tags were given in this district, now it is 100 and going down every year.

I've seen smoking hot wolf tracks twice while hunting deer this year. Traveling in pairs, maybe three. I imagine the same wolves, as I was hunting in the same general vicinity each time. I got a buck so I guess I can't bitch too much. Still, the does I saw had two fawns with them. Had one friend who called in a pack this year with a doe bleat. Two friends called in wolves last year while rattling. Keeps one on one's toes when calling.

But giving out 800 cow tags a year had nothing to do with it. Cuz if you shoot a cow it somehow isn't as dead as when wolves kill it....

Funny how that works. Lots of guys here still killing elk in wolf country. mtmuley
