Our local lake is known for very small perch, so yes these are actually really good. Even my wife commented on there size... And she never does thatThose look like some nice sized perch!
That’s cool! Have you always been able to spear fish other than pike?Lake Saint Clair this past weekend. An annual trip when weather & life allow it.View attachment 401810View attachment 401811View attachment 401812View attachment 401813View attachment 401814View attachment 401815
Yellow perch can only be speared through the ice on the main lake of LSC, no other place in Michigan. That’s cool! Have you always been able to spear fish other than pike?
You could boil the Muskie in the tears of all the catch and release guys. I bet that’d be delicious!Yellow perch can only be speared through the ice on the main lake of LSC, no other place in Michigan.
It may not be all inclusive but off the top of my head the species that can be speared through the ice in Michigan: sturgeon (special season on Black Lake only), muskie (specific lakes & sizes), northern pike, yellow perch (LSC), sucker, carp, gar, bowfin, shad, bulkhead, catfish (I think).
There may be more but everything is listed in Michigan fishing regulations.
There's also specific regulations & species that can be taken when underwater spearing but I know nothing about that.
I worked damn hard as vice president of a state wide spearing group to get a 7 day spearing season opened on LSC a few years ago. Made it as far as the DNR holding meetings around the state to take public comment. I actually had people threaten me physically they were so upset. Ultimately the DNR claimed the results were 50% for, 50% against so they kept the no winter season for muskie on LSC. Turns out the muskie huggers have deep pockets, we didn't and that really matters. You could boil the Muskie in the tears of all the catch and release guys. I bet that’d be delicious!
The muskie huggers have been so successful in their push of catch & release BS that a person may only catch & keep one muskie per year anywhere in the state that meets minimum size limit. You could boil the Muskie in the tears of all the catch and release guys. I bet that’d be delicious!
