Another youth hunt

Tyler, a 14 yr old in my Sunday school class that I teach wanted to kill his first buck. His dad didn't have a spot to go as they do very little hunting. A few weeks ago I took my kids out to a spot not far from town to make sure this piece of block mgmt held some deer like it normally does.

My kids are still young so I brought some of my gear they could play with to distract them while I glassed. They love being the decoys!!!!

I found some deer. Watched where they bedded. The places I normally hunt would be more than Tyler and his dad would probably want to venture to so I kept it simple and decided this would be a good spot for the youth opener. Here is a little buck I watched go bed about a mile away.

Opening morning of the youth hunt was very windy, but we decided to try and get Tyler a buck. We found a small group of deer about a mile away. I was just as concerned about teaching Tyler proper hunting techniques (get the wind right, use terrain for cover, respect other hunters in the field, proper gun safety, proper shot placement, ect) as I was about getting him tagged out.

We closed the distance and got to 200 yards when I saw ears across the draw. The deer were on their feet and feeding. I took my spotter off the tripod so he could use it as a rest. He put a shell in the chamber. Like on script the deer stared feeding single file broadside right to left as they came in view.

All three deer that we could see we're bucks and the back one was the biggest. Tyler took the safety off and I told him to make sure he was holding on the right deer. My new gun is a sako 7 mag and I put the vortex viper hslr scope on it. I clicked the turret 3 clicks for that distance and told Tyler to put the crosshairs right on the front shoulder. The back deer stopped with his head down and before I got done telling him to go ahead and squeeze the gun went off. The front two deer scattered and his buck dropped in his tracks. Tyler was all smiles and so was his dad.

It was really fun to be there and participate in something that a youngster will never forget. I was super glad that the game plan worked out and it was a real hunt for him, yet wasn't a long, frustrating and disappointing outing like I heard he'd had the year before.

Just some gun nerd questions, but how far was the shot? It reads like it was about 200yds. What load and at what distance are you zeroed to need 3 clicks of elevation for that shot? Just curious.

I'm shooting a 160 grain accubond with 61 grains of imr 4831. I'm zeroed in at 100 and shooting 2788fps. At 200 my app says 1.7moa. My scope is 1/2 MOA.... So 3 clicks.
