Modest idea: I would hunt to a place with a lower success rates in exchange for a less crowding. I would swap some odds of success for having fewer people hunting the same space. Is this illogical? What's the threshold?

Very logical in my opinion. Our zones might even overlap.
I encountered someone in a spot I hunt for the first time in 15+ years opening weekend. Talked with him and he chose to go there because of e scouting.
Buddy I took out shot a buck at first light. The other guy saw nothing. Gotta know the country.
This is big. I don’t kill giants, but killing elk where I do is knowing the country. mtmuley

Being around people sucks worse. Imo.
I am fortunate to hunt an area with a few other guys that have hunted it for over 30 years. Others hunt some but don't know how. We do ok. mtmuley

I think there’s a threshold. If there’s enough critters running around I don’t mind seeing some people.
