As I prepare my camp for packing in on horseback, I'm evaluating how to make things more packable. One aspect that I am looking to improve is making the side wall poles for my Alaknak 12x12 tent more compact for pack horse travel.

I've noticed that the poles fit inside a 3/4" pvc pipe so I am considering cutting the poles in half and sleeving the joint with either 3/4 inch emt or pvc. Thus making the broken down poles 26 inches long or so. Much more packable.

For reattaching the poles I've ordered spring clips to go inside the pole and pop into a hole on
the sleeve. I'd probably rivet the other end.

Thoughts on whether to use 3/4 emt or PVC for the sleeve, and how long to make the sleeve?

No clue but report back with what you find out works well. I've thought about doing similar to my wall tent, but haven't been convinced it wouldn't compromise the structural integrity of the frame.

what size tubing do you have NHY?

In my case the sidewall poles are mainly to keep the walls rigid but the corners DO have more tension on them . Perhaps Oi will mark those and make the collar sleeve longer on those 4....

I cut poles out of wood for mine. Bring a piece of string/rope the length of the side poles and one the length of the center pole. Cut them out of logs and put a 16# nail in the top to hold the rope through the grommet. Saves a lot of weight.

I do this too. Works well. Space and weight on the pack horse.
