If a Game and Fish Commissioners tag was to suddenly fall into your lap for any tag in the state for elk, deer or antelope, what area do you choose? Antelope are out and deer dont trip the trigger. Am thinking Red Desert herd........

I sure wouldn't pick the red desert area. Hell you would be better off with a general tag. Bigger bulls on the general hunt these days than the red desert.

Good luck with whatever area you decide on!

I wouldn't pick the thunder basin, you can do better than that. If I were you I would go after a deer in the dubois unit. Huge mule Deer during the rut.

That is a thought but the tag isnt mine, a friends. I think he is going to waste it on Laramie Peak. Oh well.....

Thanks Greenhorn but I think he has Laramie Peak stuck in his head now. The unit has some nice bulls but access can be a pain. His tag....

There is Public on the Peak, I know a guy who just got a bull that allmost went 400 just this last week. Bring your GPS, and know where you are, you can get a big bull for sure.

Scott you can't be posting that much info man! You're going to have every utard putting in for that tag now ;)

No pic posting either!

Sorry Nesto. I have never applied for the tag. I have never even been there, just know its there. I have a pic, but its not my bull, not my area, no more info, ha.

I know there are some very nice bulls on the peak and I know there is some public land available. There is lots and lots of private as well and I dont like playing the "where the phuck am I game". I think there are better areas in the state but I am just a poor folk commoner who buys the old general tag every year and manages to eat elk steak every year as well. Thanks for the suggestions guys. He has been "promised" a 400 bull if he just shows up. Well, it just isnt that easy in my book and I think the man is in for an education.

You need some help give me a shout. I survey for a living and have access to any map you think you might need as well as all of the ownership. Some of the land owners are more cooperative than you may think. Many lease to outfitters but if you ask right they don't have any problem with you crossing them to get to public, saving a long ass hike. One of my employees and another close friend have hunted it for the last three or four years. Came out with a 378 bull during archery last year on public. Not a bad hike in and plenty of bulls to look at. May be easier areas in the state to hunt, but the biggest bulls come from this area most of the time. Good luck to you friend.

I agree with you and I wish him the best of luck with his tag. Many would think about donating a left nut to have that tag. Bulls of a lifetime do come off the peak. Many are from private land. If he lines up some private, go for it....

Here is a sad note, I was offered the tag but already have two in my pocket with no need for three tags so I passed. Might be kicking myself in the nuts one day.
