I see we have a new guy in town to replace Jourdannais (sp?) Do any of you local guys know anything more about him than the newspapers here given us? Brand new out of school I guess. We have some issues around here to be sure. mtmuley

I had a talk with another MT biologist the last week of MT's rifle season and he had some great things to say about the new Bitterroot biologist.

Some of the "experienced" MTFWP biologists were not that great, IMO. Definitely needs to be some new blood brought into the MTFWP.

I am always uneasy with a new bio, and even more so with one that's this green. The Root isn't one of the funnest areas to work for. He has his work cut out for him that's for sure.

The meeting orchestrated by our tea party members the other night is a great intro for him. I guess trial by fire will make or break this guy.

We could use a person with a long term vested interest in our wildlife here, and one that gets to know all the players, as well as the wildlife he'll over see.

Tjones sat in on the interviewing process and has a better understanding of what this new guy might bring. I'm cautiously optimistic.

shoots, did you attend the "town hall" the other night? I was working in Idaho, and I will miss the FWP comment meeting too. Glad I got OYOA to keep in touch. mtmuley

The place was filled with outfitters, and guides. The SCI rep that lives here was also there, and his family is in the outfitting industry. So the Senators that called this "Town Hall" meeting had set up the agenda. The theme was:

We don't care about the resource or science, we don't want our seasons restricted. We want a 5 week season and FW&P's personnel should all be fired it they can't produce. We have a predator problem and need predator control.

Actually they claimed the science showed we don't need restrictions in those HD's.

The numbers in HD 240 have only been lower a few times in 30 years, and the bull/cow ratio is the lowest at 8/100 cows.

The other district in queston is HD 261 and the numbers are on the low end, with bull cow ratio's at 14. Calf recruitment went up in both this past winter.

The other main HD's (270, and 250 are already permit. So it makes sense to go that route for the other main ones.

The other interesting part of this deal is that the Senator (outfitter) that called this meeting has an area already in a permit area, rumor was he was trying to sell it, with limited entry permits making it hard to do so, and another rumor has it that he was trying to buy a area in HD 240 that could go permit. The business in question comes from the family of the SCI regional rep. Not much going on here.
