For winter kill in Wyoming. The birds were picking at this dead fawn this morning. Looked like it died over night, it was -8 degrees at 9am when I saw it. Looked like an undersized fawn but I'm no deer biologist.

Man animals have a tough life during winter, seeing it died and curled up trying to salvage heat at it's last moments is tough.

I expect the fawn had other issues - illness, injury,... Very early in the season for winter stress, or starvation.

Possible CWD, seems a bit early for a true winter kill.

Then cwd is on the winter range if that's the case

"While yearlings and even fawns can contract CWD (often getting the disease in utero from their mother), late-stage CWD symptoms are usually only visible in adult animals because of CWD’s long incubation period (usually around 18 months but may be as long as two years)."

Might be a bit early but we have had quite a bit of pretty hard core winter already. On and off since late September.

Hmm, not good, but hopefully not true winter kill. Be interested if you see any others in the near future. Hopefully just a one off.

Yeah hopefully a one off, it did look undersized and most of the doe look healthy right now
