I was lucky enough to draw 6A Late season Elk and have heard the roads are horrible in this unit. I am planning on flat towing a capable jeep behind my cab over camper. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the unit could suggest a base camp that they feel I would be able to get too that is close enough to fuel and of course elk would be a bonus :-). Feel free to PM me if anyone is willing to share. Thanks in advance

Camp off the main FS roads, you’ll want the flexibility if it wet and muddy. PM Me with any specific questions

Roads that you can camp on aren't bad, you'll be fine.
I was hoping to find a camp that is a good jumping off point to scout and get back to fuel and back and forth with the jeep and my personnel carriers :-). I have 4x4 gmc with a Cabover which will limit me a bit on where I can get to for a base. After that the jeep is very capable. Plan to head up there on the 20th. If you are willing to share some advice via pm as I realize posting a good base camp spot for all just ends up not a good camp spot any more.

The MVUM shows where you can camp and, although it wasn't enforced, most complied. We camped across from the college ranch between Flag and Happy Jack, it is a well known spot with room for 6-8 camps. Only problem was the cattle, If I ever get drawn again, I'll bring an electric fence.
Once you get a few miles west in the southern half of the unit, the roads are the roughest I have ever been on. ATV was slightly better than walking, the real setup was the $40K sxs with 24" of travel, those guys hauled ass.

This pic doesn't do justice to the roughness of the roads.

We stayed in Munds Park and it’s only 20 min to where we started hunting. There are two fuel options there. We were in elk every day.

A SXS is where it’s at. A jeep will be kinda miserable on these “roads”. You can rent a SXS for what you are likely to spend on gas flat towing that jeep.
