I've got a 1895 cb marlin with a 26"barrel 10 shot. I'm using federal cases, cci 200 primers hornady 300 fn, and 58gr of h4198 hodgens pouder, and a real good recoil pad. It cronos at an average 2395fps. For a 4570 that fast and it shoot fairly flat(for a 300gr). I've tryed 59gr but it was reai hard to get the cases out after I fired it. I've looked at a lot of loads that use the 350gr but I'm a little reluctent to change this load is extremle acurret
even out to 300yds. Any good reason I should change???

While I am no expert at a 45-70 I do have to ask what is the load being used for?
I also want to ask are you using the factory sights with this rifle?

I want a 45-70 pretty bad. I found a winchester 1886 with a LONG octogon barrel. I also found a marlin cowboy. The marlin had some nasty sights on it. If I had one I think I would do a short tang sight of some sort.
The marlin is 400.00 and the winchester is 1300.00 I would like to get the Winchester but I don't know about the price. About your question. The 300 gr should be ok for shots under 150 yards on big game. If I were to want to hunt elk with it I might go with a bullet in the 400 gr range.
