The 3 liter duramax 1/2 ton gm trucks get good mileage. Max tow rating rivals older 3/4s, 12k I think. As mine broke in i got 29 mpg with a topper on it...21 to 22 pulling an 18 foot boat.

From the factory, a 2001 Ford F250. Don't buy a new truck. Costs way more than they're worth to buy and fix. You can replace the entire drivetrain on a 20 year old pickup with brand new components and end up spending half the money and have a more reliable, simpler and less expensive to maintain vehicle. Was just talking to my neighbor a few days ago. The tailgate on her '23 Ram 3500 was stolen. Replacement cost $7000, for a tailgate.

I've had several diesels before with the price of fuel here my fuel costs would have been about the same. I've had plenty of diesel maintenance and repairs bills, ill hold off for now. I hope yours gives you zero problems.
I know and I really wish I could get one. The issue with them is the payload capacity. Highest I found was 1,400 lbs with the 12,200 lbs towing capacity. Once you add up a little gear, people, and a trailer tongue weight, it's easy to go over that payload capacity. I would go over it constantly.
Diesel is 50% more than unleaded here. Couple that with maintenance cost and it just wouldn't pencil out. The high mpg is very intriguing. Maybe if diesel was cheaper than gas like it used to be. There'd have been no debate for me then.
