Never stepped foot in this unit. Time constraints and fuel cost prevented me from doing any pre season scouting.
First couple days of the hunt were spent trying to juggle the state trust and private land checkerboard. Some glassing points that we wanted to check out were either land locked, or choked with juniper.
We decided to go to another part of the unit and try our luck on the BLM. Immediately we were able to glass up several bucks at more than 2 miles away. Drove to the area to try our luck that afternoon. Does busted us. We were hoping the bucks didn’t leave with them. Rest of the afternoon was uneventful.
We drove back there the next morning. We spotted a decent 2 point. It was tempting but my son said to wait. We’ll find the bigger ones. He was right. A nice 4 point appeared at 270 yards. By the time I was in a comfortable shooting position, he moved behind some trees. The 2 bucks moved to the top of the ridge. The 2 point leading the way. They were approaching an opening. I let the 2 point pass and squeezed off a shot as the 4 point appeared. He dropped right there. Probably the best shot I ever took.
And yes I did get bit by the scope
