1953 Winchester model 12 for sale

I have my great grandfather’s in the safe, almost identical except it’s a full choke. I haven’t found a tree tall enough to save a squirrel from that thing. Awesome guns, heck of a buy for somebody

My dad was a big fan of the model 12. I have 5 in the safe from him.

Less than a case of shells. Not sure if i should be impressed or appauled lol. Great gun at a great price.

This is the kind of gun first time, adult onset hunters should buy. As opposed to some synthetic semiauto from a big box retailer.

Using steel shot in a 1953 Winchester Model 12 with a fixed Modified choke is generally safe, provided you use standard, smaller-sized steel loads (#4 or smaller) and avoid high-velocity steel. While the modified choke is considered acceptable for steel, caution is advised as steel shot can still pose a risk of barrel bulging or scoring.

  • Choke Considerations: The modified (½) choke is the tightest recommended for steel shot to avoid severe damage to older barrels.
  • Shot Size & Velocity: Stick to standard, smaller steel shot sizes (e.g., #4, #6) to prevent excessive pressure and potential scoring. Avoid large steel shot (BB, BBB, T) which can cause issues.
  • Barrel Integrity: The 1953 Model 12 uses "Nickel Steel" or similar, which is stronger than older Damascus barrels but still susceptible to damage over time from the hard steel shot.
  • Alternatives: If you are concerned about damaging the vintage barrel, alternatives like bismuth are a superior, safer choice for non-toxic requirements.
Disclaimer: Proceed with caution when shooting steel through any older fixed-choke firearm.
