Someone cheated, got caught. They took his wolfy off the board. Went out above the house today. Found old tracks is all.

I bet it doesn't go thru the weekend before its closed again. Give me Saturday morning!!!!

I don't know the details Bambi, I am on pretty good terms with the local wolf bio here, but all he could say was that a private citizen turned him in for something.

Buddies and I have been wondering exactly what happened. Maybe shot it in another district, used a foxpro, something like that, blabbed and got caught.

I thought I had a surefire way to get some wolves in. My DD will bark her ass off on command, I thought all I had to do was get close to some and set her up next to me. They would here her loud ass bark and come in to kill her(with me there to protect her). Thought about it, read the regs, and right there in black and white:

It is unlawful to:
Hunt wolves using dogs!!

Really? What are you going to do? Send your bird dog in for the kill? Buy about 5 Fila Brasiliero fighting dogs and teach them to hunt wolves? Come on FWP. Loosen up, do you want that quota filled or not!

Damm, I was heading to the shelter to get some dogs/bait and drive to Montana. I figured a couple dozen shitzu mIxes might do the trick as well as save the local shelter some $. We have no shortage of free roaming dogs in these parts so I'd actually be solving a problems well. Maybe next year.

Wouldn't that mean using dogs to pursue or chase the animal? You are simply going on a hike with your pet dog on a leash and carrying a weapon for self defense. I think your fine as long as your dog is on a leash and not let free from it. I would call about it. I'm sure they will ho hum about it but try to get an explanation of what using dogs to hunt means.

Whoever calls for the explanation, can you ask them this question for me, "If I stake my wife's little white cockapoo out on a frozen beaver pond and set up my blind 100 yards away, does that constitute hunting with dogs?"

Let me know what the answer is.

I promised the wife I wouldn't let the wolves get the dog. Just trying to get creative here.

Yeah, that is what the intent of the rule is, but it isn't what it says. LOL

"Mr. Warden, is it legal to use my trained gun dog as wolf bait?"

Got the stink eye from my wifey over the idea. "Yes, dear, Ursie will be fine! I am the one with the gun."

How about hunting elk with dogs?

I posted a poll question a while back about whether e-callers should be allowed for hunting mountain lions. The issue was in front of the CO Wildlife Commission. Many people testified against it, saying that it was a slippery slope to allow big game to be hunted with the aid of electronic calls. They said that it wouldn't be long before people would want to use e-callers for elk. The logic seems flawed to me, especially when it's not the "people" who are making the rules, it's the WC.

For the record, I'm on your side, and I dont' have a problem with e-callers for lions. ;) Just pointing out how a similar rule was justified.

MT definitely tends to err on the side of caution. No trail cams(can you tell I am still chapped about that! Missing out on some serious fun!) , no bear baiting, no bear hounding, no e calling for wolves, no baiting, etc.

ID and BC seem to really try to step up predator reduction. I wish we would look at SOME of the things they do. But I can sure see how things get twisted and argued in all ways imaginable.

Shows the importance of getting in front of the commission.

I agree with you that Montana is wayyy too concerned with what the anti-hunters think.

Really confusing how they listen to a few people whine that using ecallers for lions/bears/wolves could lead to ecallers for elk....when they then totally ignore the fact they're handing out too many additional elk b tags, deer b tags, etc. when that has clearly led to huge drops in deer/elk populations across the state.

They tend to have a real knack for listening to the wrong "people" and not listening to the "right" people...including their own biologists.

Funny stuff...sort of.

In my opinion there is no cheating to get a wolf. A dead wolf is a good wolf.

I would think a coyote howler would bring them in.From what I hear wolves will go out of their way to kill a coyote.Non electronic of course.
