10 Point Cow Hunt

Nicely stated, thanks for your input.

Clearly there are some people who value a cow hunt, I see last year a NR drew EF002O3R with 25 points! Could have been a mistake I guess.
See these type of draws all the time. And I suspect they are mistakes and get returned to get points back.
Here’s that 1 tag back in 2nd draw. So someone did turn it in. Most likely that same person you listed after they realized they mistyped EE as EF

I'm looking at my application options for Colorado 2026.

I have 10 elk points and am considering applying for a cow tag. It might seem crazy, and perhaps it is, but I can draw a cow tag in the best units in Colorado and one which suits my plans (both location and timing) for a road trip to the South West corner of the state.

Anyone else burn points on cow tags for the experience and glad they did?
Seems like a reasonable use of points IF the specific area you want to hunt in isn’t replicateable in a lower point unit of same species, or accessible with other species?

I’ve had a blast on 5 point cow hunts in Terrain I couldn’t find elsewhere (wilderness & topography). Would it have been better with a bull? Maybe, maybe not. But I enjoyed the cow hunt too.

Thoughts on using 4 points for a cow hunt for my 16 year son to try to get him his first elk? lets say maybe in the NW corner quality unit like 201 ?

All the responses on here criticizing the idea of burning points on a cow tag are crazy work. Think about it this way- with 5 points in CO, you can get a mediocre bull tag that will have lots of other hunters. Or, you can get a cow tag in one of the most beautiful parts of the Rockies that you will probably have largely to yourself. Is the chance of having a rack on the wall really such a draw that it warrants discouraging everyone from considering the latter?

Last two years I've hunted cow tags and had an absolute blast, wouldn't trade those trips for anything.

Some guys like playing chess some like checkers. Hunting a little bit harder tag with pressure for a bull sounds like a more challenging hunt. It just depends on what game you wanna play
