    Good Article Ben Long

Well done. Just read the article this morning. BTW Ben...shared a hunting camp in Unit 121 with you about a decade ago. Glad to hear you're still at it.

    Rifle caliber for elk?!

+1 on that. They all work. It's about knowing your gun and feeling comfortable with it. Great calibers all, but I use a 7mm Rem Mag for everything because of the flat trajectory and the mid-range grain weight (175gr.). My teenage daughter has shot 2 elk at 150+ yards with her 7mm-08 with...

    Shoulda moved to MT sooner

Haha! I love this. Well put Straight Arrow! I grew up in Montana and thought the same for many years!

    Elk barks

I have lucked out with kill shots twice now using the Bull Nervous Grunt to bring bulls closer when they hang up. Bugling back and forth and no progress after 10-15 minutes...try a Nervous Grunt. It can be genuinely surprising what happens...they come right in to investigate what's going on...

    crunchy snow or snapping branches?

I Agree 100% when you've got wind advantage as well... ...but then again, I've had little luck finding elk where the snow's crunchy regardless of noise...it makes their feeding tougher because of having to dig through the crusty ice layer to reach their feed. They either climb higher to...

My Daughter's Beautiful NW MT Whitetail

That is pretty dang funny, but actually...it's scary how true it is...my daughter got an elk her first season of being a legally-aged hunter in Montana, but she truly worked for it. It took no less than 10 days hunting the area to finally get her shot. ...but it took no less than 30 days of...

My Daughter's Beautiful NW MT Whitetail

Thanks ElkNut. The rifle she uses is a 7mm-.08 shooting 140 grain bullets. We've found it's a great combo deer/close-range elk rifle for her!

My Daughter's Beautiful NW MT Whitetail

Thanks for the nice comment. This buck has the same G2 split on both sides. The symmetry of this buck astounds me.

My Daughter's Beautiful NW MT Whitetail

Second to last day of MT rifle season my daughter and I were high in the NW Montana Swan Range tracking two heavy, mature 5x5 bull elk we'd hunted the previous 2 days and previous weekends...likely only a few minutes ahead of us and we were sure this was our day. Wind was shifting so I figured...

    NW MT bull

BIG BIG Congrats DJ! I was lucky enough to be on the receiving-end of a picture text Drahthaar sent after knocking this guy down. I had just spent 10 hours 3500' above Drahthaar chasing a single set of bull tracks I came across...no dice for me. Came back to the rig and the rain started to...

How much snow is to much??

I've found sheds from mature bulls at 7500' in Northwest Montana, where up to 6- to 7-feet of snowpack is usually attained by the time they drop in February. I'm convinced some of these big boys call the high country home for most of the year.

If you could live anywhere in Montana or Wyoming.

Drahthaar and I are NW Montana boys. My extended family is primarily from North Dakota so I know that most of my cousins get claustrophobic in NW Montana. But given the criteria you mentioned, I'd point you to the Lower Clark Fork (Thompson Falls / Trout Creek). TONS of game in those...

    1 Lucky Guy!

Nice job! Being a kind and friendly Montanan brings good things from other kind and friendly Montanans! Well done, and yes...you are one lucky SOB. Getting a hook into a place like that is a lifetime achievement. And I hate to say it, but when elk fever hits, even friends do some stupid...
