Unit 551 has alot of summertime motorcycle and atv trails how does that effect the elk herds in general will they stick around in sanctuary or eventually move out all together asking cause I like the unit after hunting it last year and found sign was in woods early and stayed all day on meadows... -

CO Unit 66. Which season?
Looking at possibly hunting 66 myself this year. Sounds like it is a pretty rugged unit and I need to definitely get into better shape. I've hunted a few other units in CO. Anybody have any thoughts on how it compares as far as steep/rugged compared to 22, 71, 551? -

Number of Points Needed for CO Elk
Another thing to look at is the objective for the particular unit. I read about unit 551; GoHunt indicates they are seeking to reduce elk tag numbers to allow for mule deer. However, the available tags given each year fluctuate up and down. During 4th Rifle, available tags were reduced... -

...away from roads helps but area still sees a lot of use. Unit 49 is a long shot with 7 points, took 9 last year to guarantee a tag. Also hunted 551 twice second season, elk the first time and deer the second time. Didn’t see a ton of deer but 4th season could be different if they get pushed... -

Does anyone have experience hunting Unit 551 in CO? Friend wants me to go out and hunt with them 3rd season. They drew tags in adjoining unit, so i will be on my own. There are 3 units with OTC tags adjoining the unit they are hunting, but 551 is close and decent hunting success -

the wife has drawn an archery tag in unit 551 in CO. I've been doing a bit of studying for the trip, and noticed there are a lot of motorcyle/atv trials in some good looking parts. does anybody know if these heavily used? we're typically off the rd typically 2-5 miles from the truck with boots... -

Gunnison basin help
i was in 551 late September elk hunting, and saw deer everyday. there were a lot of smaller ones, but did run into some absolute studs. -

I haven’t found that the ATV traffic effects the elk. The elk are in there but tend to move quite a lot. I have a couple areas that have had elk passing through but I really need to figure out their hiding spots.- The Hollow
