I would like to do a antelope hunt in wyoming if I don't draw CO Elk tag. I have never been Antelope hunting and I thought it would be a good back up hunt to do. Are there any areas you would suggest to go that may have leftover tags with plenty of graslands or public hunting (BLM)? I don't care to shoot a trophy, would just like to take my dad and brother in law out there for a good week of hunting. When do leftover tags become availible, how do you buy them OTC or web site?

By definition the areas with lots of public are the most sought after units. If you want to hunt with a bow look into Nebraska or SD. If not I would start comparing blm and walk in maps to the traditionally left over units in Wyoming. It's not easy but definately doable...

Leftovers become available in July and you can buy them online for Wyoming. I think some areas are going to start getting less tags to generate leftovers after the draw. My suggestion would be to find a grassland area and overlay the hunting unit map nd start searching the Wyoming game and fish website for their drawing and statistics. If you're doing archery, CO also has OTC tags for antelope.

Unit 7 near Newcastle and 29 south of there usually have leftover tags and both have lots of public land. Unit 7 also has 20,000 acres of private land enrolled in the WIHA program. It is all signed and free to hunt by just walking in. If you buy a leftover tag in any unit it's best to go the second week and let the crowds go home. Also, if you want to hunt the earlier special season with a bow, you have to first bug a tag and then buy the $30 archery permit. That allows you to hunt both seasons until you fill your tag.

Unit 7 is also overrun with the orange army come rifle season. So, unless you're getting plenty far away from the roads and drivable 2 tracks...good luck. Hell, it's even getting busy during archery season. Even the wildlife biologist for that area has said he wonders where the antelope went, since they aren't being seen in strong numbers anymore, even on private land.

John---I see you keep saying that about 7 in several threads and I was all over that unit the second week last year and there were plenty of animals and hardly a sole other than myself. I'm sure it's like any unit opening week, but if you get off the roads a mile or two and actually hunt there are plenty of animals. I've sent at least 5 or 6 people out to that unit the last couple years for the second week and everyone of them tagged out and had a good hunt. One of the fellows I know on another BB has a big ranch southwest of unit 7 and if he fills up with hunters on his ranch he suggests the others go and try unit7. Do you, or have you hunted 7 after the first week like I have?

I guess I'm full of shit, as well as my friends that live in Newcastle, and the DOW officers and wildlife biologist in the area. Don't worry about anything I say from now on, from my own personal experience, as well as the experience of other people I know. Also...let's keep tossing out units and areas out in the open forum area.
John, why don't you tell us how you really feel? And I guess even though Topgun hunted there last year, he must be full of *#?! too because what he said doesn't conform exactly to your experience. And whats the problem with guys giving out unit numbers? Aren't we all on here to try and help each other out? I'll be going to Wyoming this fall and hopefully somebody on here can help me out and maybe ill be able to help somebody else next year, maybe even you John.

Are you looking for archery or rifle in CO?
Going for a muzzel tag this year my dad and I have 3 points and have a good chance to draw our area. He is 73 and I really would like to see him take an elk, cow or bull. We should have shot one 5 years ago and I had him pass on a 4x4 bull opening night and that has been his last chance in three hunts.

Sorry I try to help a few people go have fun John! It's not like I'm sending 1000s of people to find your honeyhole or something!!! The only people I've ever heard that didn't have good success in 7 were ones who didn't really hunt, but rather rode the blacktop roads thinking they could shoot a goat out the truck window, and then came back to the motel I happened to suggest the guys stay in bitching about there not being any goats around, LOL!!! I do agree that I seldom hunt the first week of any season out there because there are too many people. However, I love going out during September to bow hunt when all is quiet and again from the middle of October until the end of the season for deer in early November. I may even make one long trip this year from the middle of September until the middle of November, with a week or so in the middle to take my pointer up into ND for some pheasants where I also go every year. I call Wyoming my second home and if something ever happens to my wife, God forbid, it WILL be my home!!!

I think we kinda got off on a bad foot...lol I'm going by my own experience, plus what my friends that live and hunt in the unit, plus what the biologist and game wardens in the area have said. I'm not trying to run anyone out of a honey hole or anything, but more or less trying to have someone potentially waste time and effort. I'm very happy for you that you've had success in the unit. My experience was different, some of it was my own fault for missing a buck at 33 yards with my nice shiny new Z7...lol

Newcastle is a neat area to live in as it's only a few minutes east and your'e into some neat Black Hills hunting and heading out the other way where we're talking about it's all open plains and draws. I love the drive over around Custer State Park where I try to stay a day or two on out and over the Mountains where I usually hunt.
