Now we are looking at a Type 9 tag in Unit 36, west of Story. Anyone hunt this unit for archery only elk recently? How is access in terms of getting into the forest in this unit. Seems like there is plenty of non-wilderness are to hunt, but can't see many roads going into this area, and we certainly aren't going to hike in from Story. Thanks.

I have not hunted this unit with archery equipment, but I am familiar with the unit and the access points.

From north to south:

From Story there is a walking/horse trail up South Piney Creek.

The next access to the south would be across some state land to the National Forest - a long walk.

Then, there is a horse trail that starts on the HF Bar Guest Ranch and accesses the National Forest.

Continuing on south there is access through the Bud Love Wildlife Habitat Management Area. You can drive back to the tree line and then there is a walking/horse trail up to the National Forest.

Then on the south end of Hunt Area 36 there are a couple places you can access the hunt area from a couple trail heads. Horses or ATV's would make this access easier. Most hunters access the south part of the unit from Hunter Corals or by taking the trail up to Soldier Park. To access the south end of unit 36 you have to cross parts of Hunt Area 35, so make sure you get north of the North Fork of Clear Creek or the irrigation canal that connects the North Fork of Clear Creek to French Creek or north of French Creek.

You are correct, not many roads that you can drive a full size vehicle into Hunt Area 36 - this is the reason it is managed as a general area.

Good luck.
