I’m new to this forum, and new to elk hunting..looking to take my sons on an elk hunt..we went on a mule deer hunt in region C this past year and got hooked on western hunting! It’ll be our first elk hunt...knowing it might take a few years to draw a bull tag, has anyone ever hunted this unit for a bull or cow only? Just looking to see if it’s worth our time..we only have 1 pref point. Just looking for suggestions on how to hunt it if we do get a tag..I noticed the season started Oct 9..should we hunt later or on opening day..? Any advice is welcomed! Thanks!

Can't comment on the elk hunting itself. But the vast majority of the elk in the unit are going to be west of Buffalo Creek Rd. I'll let others comment if that area sees crowding with the 200 bull hunters and 150 cow hunters, in addition to a general deer area opening on the 15th. I would guess waiting till after the deer season is over on the 21st might be best for the unit.

Do you have access to horses or are you willing to backpack into seriously rugged country? Not trying to push you away, but the big bulls are either in the checkerboard, which is a right place right time kind of deal/private access, or in the nastyness that icebreaker described.

The cows/raghorns are more accessible though and down lower.

Good/great bulls in the unit though, and worth it if you can afford the time.
